Project Overview: MaxumStone Precast Blocks Stabilise Slope
The Towers Health & Racquets Club is a prominent leisure facility in Bedford, UK. As part of a 2025 renovation, the facility required a retaining wall to reinforce a hillside adjacent to its property. Apart from its primary structural strength, achieving a natural appearance was an added benefit, to match the club’s upmarket environment. MaxumStone was chosen for its hollow core design, exceptional drainage capabilities, and rugged natural stone finish.
The retaining wall stretches approximately 200 m. (650 ft.) long and reaches a maximum height of 1.5 m. (5 ft.). It runs directly behind the tennis courts, continues along the club and extends toward the rear parking area.
The project’s MaxumStone blocks were supplied by local producer Tracey Concrete, with installation overseen by C. J. Furey Construction. Their expertise in site-specific construction challenges ensured that the MaxumStone gravity wall was built with efficient precision. The client required an installation that provided slope reinforcement, long-term durability, and a refined aesthetic.
MaxumStone’s precast system, combined with the gravity wall system’s extender units, offers a balance of strength, resiliency, and visual appeal. The project provides a reliable soil retention solution while maintaining the polished appearance expected of a luxury leisure facility.
Project Challenges & Solutions: High-Strength Blocks, Top-Tier Finishing Details
The project faced several logistical and structural challenges that influenced the design and construction process. The site sits directly below a large hillside, which increases runoff pressures during rainfall events. Protecting the tennis courts, parking areas, and facility at the slope’s base required a wall with exceptional strength and drainage.
Access restrictions also shaped the project’s construction strategy. The work area was narrow and constrained, limiting the ability to bring in larger equipment. This typically slows installation progress, but MaxumStone’s hollow core blocks are lighter and can easily be built using compact equipment. This streamlined installation and reduced costs, especially compared to alternative solutions like gabion baskets, which require more time and labor.
MaxumStone’s versatile design secured the slope behind the tennis courts, building and car park, while enhancing stormwater management. Safely directing water away from the wall, MaxumStone delivers long-term erosion control for the slope and protects its surrounding infrastructure.
Wall Design: MaxumStone Gravity Wall Excels in Tight Access
The project features a gravity retaining wall design, further reinforced by MaxumStone’s interlocking gravity extender units behind the blocks. These units add critical mass to the base of the wall without requiring deep excavation. This minimised disturbance to the hillside while maximising stability. HFW Geogrid reinforcement was also used in select areas to help restrain the site’s fence and further strengthen the wall crest.
Behind the tennis courts, the wall incorporated MaxumStone’s half-high units to provide flexible and subtle wall height transitions. These sections reached the maximum 1.5 m. (5 ft.) height. Remaining portions of the wall only needed two courses of standard blocks, 0.61 m. (4 ft.) high. The varying block sizes allowed for smooth step-down features and a more natural integration into the facility’s landscape.
The project engineer, Tailor Engineering, realised drainage was a critical design component given the hillside above the wall. Additional gravel was placed directly behind the wall, separated from backfill by filter fabric, to slow runoff velocity and protect the structure. The result was a fortified, engineered design that balances slope stabilisation with natural looks, aligning perfectly with client’s vision.
Installation: Gravity Extender Reinforcement Reduces Wall Depth
Despite limited site access in areas, this project was completed in only a few weeks. Crews faced the challenge of maneuvering materials in narrow spaces where large machinery could not access and operate. MaxumStone’s hollow core blocks proved beneficial, as their reduced weight offered easier installation with compact equipment. This allowed crews to efficiently handle materials, lifting and placing blocks in tight access areas.
Construction was expedited by MaxumStone’s large block size, with each unit covering 0.74 sq. m. (8 sq. ft.) of facing. This reduced the number of blocks, minimised installation time and reduced truckload deliveries.
Gravel was placed inside each block’s hollow core to enhance drainage and wall mass. Additional drainage gravel and filter fabric were installed behind the wall’s upper sections, helping control water velocity from hillside runoff. The integration of gravity extenders efficiently reduced wall depth to fortify structural strength without deep excavation.
The installation experience of local experts C. J. Furey Construction and Pellikaan Construction, paired with MaxumStone’s versatile block system, made for a smooth installation. The combination of lighter blocks, more block facing coverage and gravity extender units helped crews complete this retaining wall quickly.
Block Aesthetics: Textured Precast Blocks Fit Facility’s Polished Aesthetic
Aesthetic appearance was a major component for this retaining wall project. The gravity wall faces high-visibility areas that Towers Health & Racquets Club members see and use. Its placement behind tennis courts, the leisure facility, and parking area made visual impact an important consideration.
MaxumStone’s rugged, chiseled stone texture provided a professional, natural appearance that blended seamlessly into the surrounding landscape. Unlike gabion baskets, which can appear industrial and require frequent maintenance, MaxumStone provided a polished, durable finish with minimal maintenance required.
The block faces were randomised during installation to give the wall a more varied, natural and unrepetitive pattern. Cap units were installed atop the MaxumStone wall for an elegant finishing detail. These elements give the project a high-end aesthetic that match the facility’s upscale identity.
Half-high units added design versatility, allowing the wall to taper gracefully behind the tennis courts. This subtle step-down feature provides a gradual transition, complementing the wall’s high-strength performance that will continue to excel for decades.
